Recent research published in the journal Circulation of the American Heart Association says that if you have heart disease, a healthy diet can help prevent heart attacks and stroke. Benefits added benefit of taking preventive medicines your doctor prescribes.

These findings come from a study led by Mahshid Dehghan, Ph.D., a nutritionist at the Population Health Research Institute, McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.


The researchers surveyed 31,546 adults (average age 66.5) who have heart disease or damage to major organs to find out how often they drink milk and eat fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, whole grains, and poultry in before. Questions about lifestyle choices, such as exercise, smoking, and alcohol consumption, were also asked in the interview.

The number of fruits, vegetables, dairy, and grains are consumed daily, as well as the ratio of fish to meat consumption, determine the total value. During five years of follow up, the researchers found that cardiovascular cases occurred in 5190 among the participants.

The analysis showed that people who eat a heart-healthy diet has:

     35% reduction in risk of cardiovascular death
     28% reduction in the risk of congestive heart failure
     19% reduction in risk of stroke
     14% reduction in the risk of new heart attacks

Although people around the world have diverse food habits, healthy diet associated with protection against heart disease over and over around the world, regardless of the level of the local economy, said Dehghan.

The team also found that if you take a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and eat more fish than meat, you get more protection against heart disease than for cancer, injury, or fractures.

This study supports previous research showing that an unhealthy diet causes an increased risk of developing heart disease.

Dehghan closes with the conclusion:

"Physicians should advise patients at high risk to improve their diet and eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish can substantially reduce the recurrence of cardiovascular drug therapy alone surpass and save lives globally."
